What is OpenVZ?

OpenVZ is an open source container-based virtualization solution built on Linux. OpenVZ creates isolated, secure containers (otherwise known as VEs or VPSs) on a single physical server enabling better server utilization and ensuring that applications do not conflict. Each container performs and executes exactly like a stand-alone server; containers can be rebooted independently and have root access, users, IP addresses, memory, processes, files, applications, system libraries and configuration files. See OpenVZ Wiki for more information.

The OpenVZ project is an open source community project supported by Parallels and is intended to provide access to the code and ultimately for the open source community to test, develop and further the OS virtualization effort. It is also a proving ground for new technology that may evolve into the Parallels Virtuozzo Containers product offering. We encourage the community to access, use, develop and comment on the software and references on this site.

OpenVZ is the basis of the Parallels Virtuozzo Containers™ — a commercial virtualization solution offered by Parallels.

You can also check a nice introductory article about OpenVZ at Wikipedia (also available in German, French, Russian, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, and Korean).

Testimonials

Hello all, just downloaded and installed OpenVZ, and i must say its a big improvement over other VPS systems that i have tested IMHO. -- Andy Stubbs.

Virtuozzo and openvz are wonderful - I don't know why more people aren't using them. I hear a lot of hype for xen and usermode but virtuozzo/openvz is so great for many common needs. -- forum user vmvmvm.

For my needs, OpenVZ is better than Xen. The one-kernel approach conserves memory, leaving more for applications. And having all VPS in one disk partition saves disk space. A surprise bonus was the template cache management with yum. The ease of keeping templates updated and quickly installing new operating environments is yummy! -- John Kelly.

OpenVZ was the only virtual server system that was simple to install and get working. -- forum user mintra.
